Buying coconut milk is fine, but so expensive, especially when it can be made at home for less than a fourth of the cost (depending on raw material prices that are sourced).

What You Need

  • Ingredients
    • 4 cups of water
    • 1.5-2 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut
  • Utensils
    • Stove-top pot
    • Blender/Vitamix
    • Mesh colander
    • Cheesecloths

What To Do

  1. Heat water in the pot making sure that it does not boil or simmer.
  2. Blend water and coconut shavings on high for several minutes until thick and creamy.
    1. If the blender is too small for one large batch, split into several batches.
  3. Filter through a mesh colander first to get most of the coconut out.
  4. Squeeze through several thicknesses of cheesecloth to get remaining pieces.
  5. Drink immediately or store in the fridge.
    1. Consume within 3-4 days after making for best flavor and texture.
    2. Keep in mind that there are no preservatives or fillers and the “cream” may separate on the top, if stored in the fridge. Simply shake or stir before reusing.

Flavor options

  • Add the flavor of choice after all coconut has been strained out (after step 4).
    • ½ tsp vanilla extract
    • ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries (juiced or pureed)
    • 2 tsp cocoa powder (try with ½ tsp vanilla)
    • What are your favorite flavors?
